5 Tips To Find Musicians For Your Band

Are you thinking of starting a band? Finding the right people to be in a band with is critical to your success as a musician. They not only have to be gifted musicians, but they also have to share the same drive, work ethic, and goals as you. So where do you begin? What do you need to do to begin your search for the perfect bandmates?

  1. Look online.

Ad posting sites have no shortage of people who want to join a band. Craigslist is a good example of such a website where you can find many “singer guitarist for hire” or “drummer looking for a band” ads. When using these ad websites, make sure to filter the location so that you only get a list of musicians in your area. If you find someone that you think has what you are looking for, respond to their ad.

  1. Post an ad online.

In addition to looking at ads online, you should make your own ad too. Include as much pertinent information as possible so that you can get a good amount of responses from interested musicians. If you are a band looking for a singer, say what style of singing or quality of voice you are looking for, what genre you are into, and what the rehearsal schedule is like.

  1. Connect with musicians in your area.

That guy you met at a local bar’s country music night last week or your former music teacher might be of help to you. They might know a singer guitarist for hire looking for a band to join. Get in touch with them and talk about your plans.

  1. Reach out to old friends.

If you used to play in a band, contact your former bandmates. Who knows, they might want to get everyone back together again. If not, ask if they know someone who might be interested. You can also reach out to your non-musician friends and acquaintances.

  1. Distribute flyers.

If you post an online ad stating that you are a “band looking for singer” or “musician looking to start a band” but are not getting the results you want, make flyers. Just like the online ad, these flyers should contain important details about your objective. Do not forget to include your number, email, and other contact details. Use eye-catching colors, fonts, and designs so that people are more likely to notice them. Put them up at record shops and music venues in your area.

Once you have a pool of candidates, your next step is to narrow down your list to a few people who you want to interview. You must be clear about what you expect from your new band members from the very beginning. Let them know how frequent the band practices will be. Talk about how the creative process will work. Discuss band-related expenses, fees, and other money matters upfront.  Be straightforward about conduct, professionalism, punctuality, and other things so that troubles and other problems can be avoided or at least minimized down the line.
